Engineering Technician Registration
Engineering Technicians are graduates of a National Technical Award (NTA) Level 6 or 7, or Full Technician Certificate in Engineering or equivalent. They work primarily assembling, testing, maintaining and repairing component parts of devices or systems — usually under the direct supervision of a registered engineer.

Engineering Technician Level II
Entry-Level TechnicianFor graduates of a Full Technician Certificate (FTC) or National Technical Award (NTA) Level 6 from a technical institution recognised by the Board. The starting category for technicians.

Engineering Technician Level I
Senior TechnicianFor Engineering Technicians Level II who have accumulated evaluated practical work experience. ET I technicians may take on more supervisory responsibilities within their technical domain.

Progression to Engineer
Engineering Technicians who obtain a higher academic qualification (BSc Eng, BEng, or BTech) recognised by ERB may apply to register as a Graduate Engineer (GE). Those who obtain an Advanced Diploma may register as Graduate Incorporated Engineer (GIE).
Graduate Engineer (GE)
Graduate Engineer registration is the entry point for citizen engineering graduates holding a BSc, BEng, BTech, or equivalent engineering degree. It is the initial step towards obtaining professional engineering status in Tanzania.

Graduate Incorporated Engineer (GIE)
Graduate Incorporated Engineer registration is the entry point for citizen graduates holding a Higher Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Engineering (ADE) from an engineering polytechnic or college recognised by the Board.
Graduate Incorporated Engineer
Entry-Level RegistrationFor holders of a Higher Diploma or equivalent qualification from an engineering polytechnic or college recognised by the Board. The entry point for the Incorporated Engineers pathway.

- Marine Engineering: ADE + 21 months sea service, or cadet course after 1994 + 21 months sea service

Incorporated Engineer (IE)
Incorporated Engineers are citizen engineers who hold a Higher Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Engineering (ADE) and have completed their practical training and demonstrated competence at the IE level.
Pathway to Professional Engineer
An IE who completes at least 1 year of post-registration experience and has passed a prescribed professional examination, or completed an examinable postgraduate course of at least one year, qualifies to register as a Professional Engineer (PE).
Incorporated Engineer
Full Incorporated RegistrationA Graduate Incorporated Engineer with demonstrated practical competence. IEs perform professional work under broad general guidelines, solving predictable and unpredictable complex problems.

- Successful completion of SEAP and submission of requisite SEAP documents (logbook + final report), OR equivalent demonstrated experience
- Marine Engineering: Class Two Certificate of Competency + passed written Class One exam, OR Class Two from DMI (before July 1993) + 36 months sea service

Professional Engineer (PE)
Professional Engineer (PE) is the primary professional registration category for local citizen engineers who have completed their graduate training and demonstrated full professional competence.

Full Professional RegistrationThe primary professional registration category. For registered Graduate Engineers who have completed the required practical experience and demonstrated professional competence.

- Minimum 3 years post-graduation practical experience in planning, design, field work and engineering management
- Completion of SEAP or equivalent unstructured training with demonstrated competence
- Academic/research staff: min. 2 yrs after MSc, or 1 yr after PhD

Consulting Engineer (CE)
Consulting Engineers are local registered Professional Engineers who offer public and private consulting services and work under or manage an engineering consulting firm.
Consulting Engineer
Consulting PracticeFor Professional Engineers who wish to practice independently and offer engineering consulting services. Must be employed by or engaged in an engineering consulting firm.

Independent Consulting Engineer (ICE)
The Independent Consulting Engineer (ICE) is the highest tier of individual engineering practice in Tanzania, governed by the Engineers Registration (Registration of Independent Consulting Engineers) Rules, 2016. It authorizes registered engineers to offer standalone consulting services independently, without the backing of a registered firm.
Liability & Scope
Independent Consulting Engineers assume full personal and professional liability for their standalone advice, reports, and calculations. The ICE stamp is limited to the scope of independent consulting and excludes design and construction supervision.
Independent Consulting Engineer
Highest Tier Individual PracticeFor highly experienced Professional or Consulting Engineers who satisfy the rigid liability and experience criteria to offer individual, standalone engineering consultancy.
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE) or Consulting Engineer (CE) with ERB
- Minimum 5 years post-CE experience, OR minimum 15 years post-PE experience
- Acceptable competency and professional exposure in field of specialisation
- Competency interview required

Foreign Engineer Registration (TPE & TCE)
Non-Tanzanian citizens who have valid employment or consulting contracts in Tanzania are required to register under the temporary engineering categories. These registrations are project or contract-bound and are renewed annually.
Temporary Professional Engineer
Foreign EngineersReserved for non-Tanzanian citizens who are under 70 years old and have a contract of employment in Tanzania. Registration is valid for one year and renewed annually.

Temporary Consulting Engineer
Foreign ConsultantsReserved for non-Tanzanian citizens engaged by engineering consulting firms with working contracts in Tanzania. Renewable annually.

- Contract of employment with an engineering consulting firm having a working contract in Tanzania
- Proof of registration as consulting engineer in home country
- Acceptable performance record of at least 5 years before coming to Tanzania

Renewal of Foreign Registration
Renewal of certificate of registration for TPE and TCE: USD 75.00 per renewal. All foreign applicants must be interviewed before the ERB Chairman.
